THE HEART OF GEORGIA IS THE PLACE TO BE

June 3, 2010

What’s so great about living in the Heart of Georgia area?  Most of us who have the privilege of living here will say it’s the people.   That’s right; good ole Southern Hospitality at its best.  But that’s not all there is to appreciate.

There are 12 counties that make up, what we refer to as, the Heart of Georgia.  They are Laurens (Dublin), Bleckley (Cochran), Dodge (Eastman), Emanuel (Swainsboro), Johnson (Wrightsville) Telfair (McRae), Treutlen (Soperton), Montgomery (Mt. Vernon), Twiggs (Jeffersonville), Wheeler (Alamo), Wilkinson (Irwinton), and Washington (Sandersville).

Two common points of interest as to why people may choose to live where they do are education and medical services.  Both of these covered.  In addition to each county having a public school system with a couple of counties having a private school, you’ll find several options for higher education, including Middle Georgia College in Cochran, with a campus also located in Dublin, and Brewton Parker College located in Mt. Vernon.  There are also Heart of Georgia Technical College (Dublin) and Swainsboro Technical College.   Interested in aviation?  Middle Georgia College has an Aviation Campus in Eastman which offers programs in Flight (fixed wing & helicopter), Air Traffic Control, Aircraft Structural Technology, and Aviation Maintenance.

If medical services are a priority, you will find a wide variety of doctors and specialists within the Heart of Georgia area.  The Carl Vinson VA Medical Center and Fairview Park Hospital are located in Dublin.  Telfair, Washington and Emanuel Counties, each, have a hospital.

There’s an abundance of outdoor activities available.  If you can’t find enough places to fish along the three rivers that flow through our area (Oconee, Ocmulgee, and Altamaha), you can always drive over to the Hugh Gillis Public Fishing Lake (Laurens), Dodge County Public Fishing Area, or Little Ocmulgee State Park (Telfair).  Little Ocmulgee State Park and Jay Bird Springs have RV & tent camping available along with other fun stuff for the family like swimming and miniature golf.  For the golfing enthusiast, there is a total of 9 golf courses throughout the Heart of Georgia.   We can’t forget about the horse lovers, to which there are three riding clubs to take advantage of; four if you include the Rockin D Mini Horse Farm.

The list of things to do goes on and on.  Our recreation departments offer organized sports for the young, day trips for the more mature, and everything in between that you would expect.  Most of our counties in the Heart of Georgia have an annual, family-oriented festival.  There are numerous clubs and organizations to help you get involved in the community and make new friends in the process.

Oh yeah, do you realize that if you left in the morning, say around 8:00 or 9:00,  you can easily get to one of Georgia’s beaches or the mountains in time to have lunch the same day?  How convenient is that???

Now that you have an idea of what’s available here in the Heart of Georgia, get yourself a glass of sweet tea, sit back, relax, and decide where you want to start.
